A message from the Principal

A week of open doors, a cup win, and a conversation worth having

Open Week visitors, a 7-2 National Cup win for Year 8, and World Mental Health Day tomorrow.

All week, families have walked through Cliff Park at 9.15am while lessons were happening. No set pieces, no polish: a Year 7 Maths lesson in the Do Now, a Year 10 Science practical, Year 11 heads down in English. Visitors said the same thing on the way out, that it was calmer than they expected and the students looked like they wanted to be there. Thank you to the students who answered questions and to the staff who carried on teaching with strangers at the door. We have had more requests than places, so Open Week is running again next week, Monday 12th to Friday 16th October, and current parents and carers are welcome to book.

Congratulations to the Year 8 football team, who beat Hellesdon High School 7-2 in the National Cup this week. Seven goals in a national competition is a serious result, and the way the squad kept their shape and their heads when the game opened up is what pleased the coaches most. Well done to every one of them.

Tomorrow, Saturday 10th October, is World Mental Health Day. This week some of our students watched The Drummer Boy, a play written for schools that uses live theatre to open honest conversations about mental health and about asking for help. There is more on it below, including who to talk to if your child is finding things hard. The message of the play is a simple one and worth repeating at home: you do not have to carry it on your own.

Two practical notes for Monday. Students should not arrive on site before 8.00am, when the Diner opens for free breakfast and staff are on duty. And Year 7 will now leave lessons at the same time as everyone else; the five-minute early release that helped them find their way in September has done its job.

Thank you for your support.

Every day counts: this week's figures

Our whole-school target is 92%. For your own child, the aim is 95% or better. These are the figures for the year so far, up to Tuesday 6th October. Wednesday's Cliff Park Attendance has the full picture, including what Open Week visitors see and the Friday pattern.

England's secondary schools opened the year at 94.6%. Almost all of the gap between us and the country is days with no call and no message: about 31 students a day.

Year 11 89.4% ▲ 2.6 below

Bars start at 80% so the differences are easier to see. Year 8 and Year 7 are over target. Year 10 are just under at 91.2%. Year 9 at 88.9% and Year 11 at 89.4% are our concern. Last week, Wednesday to Tuesday, the whole school was 89.6%. There are 10 school days to half term: where a year group stands on 23rd October is, every year, where it finishes in July.

311 students with 100% attendance, and this week's £20 winner

Congratulations to Phoebe Martin in Year 11, this week's winner of the £20 attendance draw. Phoebe has been in school for every session this term, and so have 310 other students: 311 in total, 40% of the academy, five weeks in.

By year group that is 74 students in Year 7, 60 in Year 8, 60 in Year 9, 71 in Year 10 and 46 in Year 11. The colds season has taken the number down from 369, so if your child is one of the 311, please tell them we noticed. Every one of them is in the draw every week, and every one has a Resilience Token from their form tutor for each full week in school.

If they are not yet, it is never too late to start a run: every student whose attendance is 100% this week, or has improved on last week, goes into Friday's draw.

World Mental Health Day: The Drummer Boy, a play that starts a conversation

World Mental Health Day, Saturday 10th October. You do not have to carry it on your own.The Drummer Boy performed in the hall at Cliff Park, with students watching

This week Year 9 and Year 10 watched The Drummer Boy, a play by Rob John written for schools and produced with the INK Festival. It was developed with Suffolk County Council Public Health and the Suffolk Safeguarding Partnership as part of a programme that uses live theatre to open honest conversations with young people about mental health, emotional wellbeing and the importance of asking for help.

It is not an easy watch, and it is not meant to be. It is honest about how hard things can get for a teenager and how much difference one conversation can make. Our students watched in silence and talked afterwards, which is exactly what it is for. Staff were in the room throughout and the pastoral team followed up with form groups.

Tomorrow is World Mental Health Day. If you take one thing from the play, take this: if your child is struggling, they do not have to carry it alone, and neither do you. Your child can talk to any adult in school. You can ring the Head of Year, or use the services below, any of which will talk to a worried parent as readily as to a young person.

Year 11 Parents' Evening: the booklet and the mock timetable, for anyone who could not make it

Thank you to the Year 11 families who came to Parents' Evening last night, and to those who went on to the East Norfolk Sixth Form College Open Evening afterwards. The evening set out what the next eight months look like: the mock exams that start on Tuesday 3rd November, how Period 0 and Period 6 work, what revision looks like week by week, and how to help at home without it turning into a fight.

If you could not be there, you have not missed it. Both documents from the evening are here to download. The Raising Attainment booklet has the key deadlines, revision techniques, how parents and carers can help, exam stress and wellbeing, useful contacts and a page for your child's action plan. The JCQ exam information and mock timetable has the full November mock timetable, paper by paper, and the exam rules every candidate has to know.

The one thing to do this weekend: find your child's mock timetable in the second document and put it on the fridge.

Climate action: Jess and Erin represent Cliff Park

Two of our Year 9 students, Jess and Erin, accompanied by Miss Pavlou Mousio, attended the Collaborative Climate Action Day hosted by East Coast College and Lowestoft Sixth Form.

The day brought together schools, colleges and environmental organisations from across Lowestoft, Great Yarmouth and the surrounding area to look at how climate change can be tackled, and sustainability promoted, through education. It was supported by Suffolk Wildlife Trust, Climate Ambassadors, Let's Go Zero and the National Education Nature Park, and Jess Asato, MP for Lowestoft, and representatives from East Suffolk Council took part.

Jess and Erin heard about the environmental challenges facing our own stretch of coast, picked up practical ways to make a difference, and looked at how a school can become more sustainable. They asked good questions and represented Cliff Park well.

We are proud of them both for taking an active interest in protecting the planet, and we look forward to building on the ideas they brought back to support a greener, more sustainable school community. If your child would like to be part of that, ask them to speak to Miss Pavlou Mousio.

PACT: something exciting is coming to Cliff Park this November

Something exciting is coming to Cliff Park this November.

For one week, Years 7, 8 and 9 will be working alongside professional performers, choreographers, vocal coaches, film makers and theatre technicians from Perfect Productions Ltd, a company that has been making professional shows for over thirty years.

Each year group gets a full day of hands-on training in school, choosing between singing, dance, film and television, or theatre lighting and sound. Then on the evening of Thursday 19th November, our students can take to the stage of the Britannia Pier Theatre in Great Yarmouth, performing in a full professional show alongside a professional cast, some of whom have West End credits.

Every student who takes part will be given the opportunity to be on that stage. Every role counts, whether it is on stage, on the spotlight, behind a camera, or on the sound desk.

Students will hear all about it in assembly on Tuesday 20th October, and a sign-up form and full details will follow straight afterwards. Tickets for the show will go on sale soon, so keep the evening of 19th November free.

We are very proud to be the first academy in the Ormiston family to offer this. More soon.

Community, Aspiration, Resilience, Excellence

CARE Points: the year group race

CARE Points are awarded in lessons for showing our values: Community, Aspiration, Resilience and Excellence. Here is this week's race by year group.

Year 7 ★ 0
Year 8 0
Year 9 0
Year 10 0
Year 11 0

Year 7 win this week, with Year 10 second and Year 8 third. Term to date it is Year 8 795, Year 10 730, Year 7 664, Year 9 616 and Year 11 550. Updated every Friday.

Please note

From Monday: arriving on site, and Year 7 lesson times

  1. 1

Please do not arrive before 8.00am

The site opens at 8.00am, when the Diner opens for free breakfast and staff are on duty. Before that there is nobody to supervise the gate or the yard, so students should not be on site. If your morning means an early drop-off, 8.00am in the Diner, with toast and a drink, is the place to be.

  2. 2

Year 7 now leave lessons with everyone else

In September, Year 7 were released from lessons five minutes early so they could find their way around the building. They know the building now, and from Monday they will leave lessons at the normal time like every other year group. The end of the school day for Year 7 is unchanged, 3.00pm.

Year 11

Period 0 and Period 6: the week at a glance

Every Year 11 student has extra teaching built into the week: Period 6 after school for everyone, and Period 0 in form time for students who will benefit from more. Here is how the week runs.

  • Who goes to Period 0 Students identified from assessment data and mock results. If your child is on the list, please treat it as part of the school day.
  • How you can help Know which sessions your child has, ask what they covered, and make sure they are in every one. Attendance so far has been strong. Keep it that way.

Sessions finish by 4.00pm. Unfortunately we are not able to provide transport home, so please check the bus times for any return journey home. If getting home after Period 6 is a problem for your family, talk to us and we will do our best to help.

Can you help? Second-hand uniform wanted

If your child has grown out of a blazer, jumper, trousers, skirt, shirts or PE kit, we would gladly take them. Clean items in good condition go straight to Cliff Park families who need them, at no cost and in confidence.

Reminders

Gates close at 8.30am. Students arriving after 8.30am will be logged as late. If your child travels by bus, please make sure they use a service that arrives before 8.30am so they are in the line-up on time.

Parking and pick-up. Please do not drive into the school car park at the end of the day. At 3.00pm it is full of students on foot and on bikes, and cars moving through it put them at risk. If you are collecting by car, please park courteously on Kennedy Avenue, away from the gates and residents' driveways, and let your child walk to you. Thank you for helping to keep the end of the day safe.

Uniform. Academy blazer, sleeves down, worn at all times inside the building unless a member of staff says otherwise. White socks are not worn over tights. Hoodies are not uniform and will be confiscated. If uniform is a struggle this term, please talk to your child's Head of Year in confidence.

Main reception. Open 8.00am to 4.00pm Monday to Thursday and 8.00am to 3.30pm on Friday. 01493 661504, option 2.

Principal drop-in. Parents and carers are welcome to drop into reception between 8.50 and 9.30am every Wednesday to meet me or a member of the Senior Team. No appointment needed.
